Professional Experience

Paul MatthewsPaul Matthews is a Texas-licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). He currently serves as the Finance Manager for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO). As Finance Manager, he manages the department’s $167.9 million budget.

In addition to working for TCSO, Paul owns a CPA practice specializing in tax preparation, tax planning and financial consulting.

Before establishing his CPA practice, Paul worked as a Senior Management Consultant for a boutique consulting group specializing in disaster consulting services.

Prior to attending graduate school at the University of Texas, Paul worked as a Controller and Portfolio Manager for a long-short equity fund. In addition, he has worked as a European Credit Analyst and as a Grain & Oilseed Analyst for a Chicago-based Future Clearing Merchant (FCM).


Texas vs OU 2009Paul Matthews is a 2005 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Masters of Business Administration (MBA). While at the University of Texas, he received the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence and was named a Sord Scholar. Paul was also the recipient of the Conoco-Phillips Scholarship.

Paul is a 1995 graduate of Indiana University at Bloomington, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Business-Finance (with Distinction). In 1997, he also completed a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Paul also holds double minors in History and Political Science.

Political Involvement

Paul Matthews is a lifelong Republican. He currently serves as the Treasurer for the Williamson County Republican Party. In 2012, he was elected Precinct Chair of Precinct 198 (Brushy Creek) and has been one of the most active Precinct Chairs in all of Williamson County. Paul was also a delegate to the 2010, 2012 and 2014 Texas Republican state conventions.

Over the years, Paul has worked on numerous political campaigns. He served as the Monroe County Republican Party’s campus coordinator for its 1992 and 1994 get-out-the-vote efforts at Indiana University. Paul was also active in the College Republicans, and served as the State Treasurer and State Parliamentarian for the Indiana Federation of College Republicans.

RRISD Involvement

Paul Matthews currently serves as a member of the RRISD Bond Oversight Committee. In addition, he was a member of the RRISD Citizen’s Bond Committee for the successful May 2014 school bond. As a member of this committee, he served as Chairman of the Finance subcommittee, authoring the subcommittee’s final report to the Board of Trustees.

Paul is also a founding member of the Advisory Committee to the Academy of International Business and Economics at Cedar Ridge High School. He remains an active member of this advisory committee and has been a regular guest speaker at Cedar Ridge High School. Paul is also a graduate of Leadership RRISD.

Professional Organization Memberships

Paul Matthews CPA, CFAPaul Matthews is a member of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) and is a member of the Austin Chapter of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. He serves as the Austin Chapter’s Treasurer and is active as a member of the Society’s Financial Literacy committee. Paul is also a graduate of the Austin chapter’s Leadership Program.

Paul is a member of the CFA Institute and a member of the CFA Society of Austin. He is also a life-member of the Indiana University Alumni Association.

Personal Interests/Family

Paul Matthews at Guadalupe PeakPaul Matthews is an avid hiker, backpacker and mountain climber. He has climbed 43 state high points, including California’s Mt. Whitney, Washington’s Mt. Rainier and Oregon’s Mt. Hood. He has also hiked to the summit of Guadalupe Peak, the Texas state high point.

Paul is also a big sports fan. Having grown up in the Midwest, Paul is a diehard Chicago Cubs and Indianapolis Colts fan. In Matthews Sonsaddition, he is a fan of open-wheel auto racing and regularly attends the Indianapolis 500.

Paul and his wife Karizma were married at Austin’s Riverbend Church in December 2007, and his family now attends the First Baptist Church in Round Rock. They have two sons, Preston Alexander and Nolan Thomas Matthews.
